Django Unchained: Did I mention that I am thrilled this film is happening?
Although Tarantino produces quite a bit, he hasn’t written or directed anything since 2009 when Inglorious Bastards was released. Here’s a brief update about the upcoming Django Unchained film shoot. The full scale production of Django Unchained is still set to shoot in New Orleans beginning February 1st. However there has been plenty of pre-production, preparation and some initial shooting going on a ranch style set in Santa Clarita, California.
The Cast
Jamie Foxx is the lucky man cast as Django in this film. I am not a rabid Jamie Foxx fan, but I look forward to how Tarantino crafts his strengths as an actor into this film. I don’t think the pick is puzzling but I am looking forward to how it pans out and ultimately how the movie shapes Jamie’s career considering this could be one of the biggest projects he has ever worked on.
Though Christoph Waltz will be in good company for this film he has had a simply fantastic performance in the film Inglorious Bastards (of course also directed by Tarantino) and he is reportedly changing his appearance considerably for Django Unchained and is to sport a massive beard and long hair. Big hair or not I am extremely excited that he is a big part of the project, as he certainly deserves it. Christoph will be playing the character Dr. King Shultz.
Kerry Washington (a relatively unknown) has been named at Django’s wife (Broomhilda) in the film. She could perhaps be best remembered for her roles in “The Last King of Scotland” and “Ray”.
The rest of the cast makes as little rhyme or reason as anything else we know about the film, all I know is that I trust Tarantino’s ability to bring a lot of different characters together to make an amazing story.
Samuel L. Jackson- Stephen (Villain)
Kurt Russell- Ace Woody (Villain)
Leonardo DiCaprio- Calvin Candie
Daniele Watts -Coco
Don Johnson- Plantation Owner
Tom Savini- Plantation Owner
Gerald McRaney- Plantation Owner
Michael K. Williams
Dennis Christopher- Leonide Moguy
Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Rumored)
SPOILER ALERT
Although the script was leaked and is out there for the movie, I deliberately placed this towards the bottom so you can opt out now if you would prefer not to hear details surrounding the plot of this film. The film is based around the character Django who is a former slave who turns to bounty hunting. His wife is taken from him and he is determined to rescue her from an “evil” plantation owner. After reading the script it is clear that Tarantino’s directing is born out of his clear vision for his scripts. He can really feel the story and explain it well. The script is definitely a Western and is set pre-civil war. The film will certainly shed a very violent light on slavery and that general time period. Like most of Tarantino’s movies I expect the film to evolve considerably from the original script, so for now I am content to sit back and eagerly await Decemeber 2012
